Behind the Seams with Sofia Latif

Get to know female founder Sofia Latif as she takes us behind the seams of her eponymous brand and shares her inspiration, sustainable values, and a little bit about herself.

What motivated you to launch your own sustainable, clean beauty brand?

I felt like women over forty were being left out of the beauty conversation unless it was about anti-ageing or reversing the signs of ageing. I had been using my own formulations for years before I launched the brand because inclusive, clean beauty that was suitable for my sensitive skin was not available. I launched the brand for bold women who want to show off their skin with confidence, and who embrace ageing in a positive way.

From a sustainability perspective, I wanted to build both environmental and human sustainability into the business model right from the start. I donate 5% from all sales to Lendwithcare through whom I provide micro-loans to female small business owners in low income countries to grow their business, and support their family and community with dignity.

What are some of the things you wish people knew about skincare?

Consistency is what creates lasting results alongside good quality products that support the health of skin microbiome. Lifestyle factors also play a part in how healthy your skin looks and feels. Keeping skincare simple, especially if you have sensitive skin, will not compromise on results either. Oils should be a part of your daily routine, even if you have oily skin, as they provide a concentrated hit of nourishment for skin without some of the preservatives, which can disrupt the microbiome on skin.

Seed oils are rich in nutrients such as essential fatty acids (EFAs), vitamins, and antioxidants that strengthen the skin's protective barrier, improve elasticity, and slow down changes in skin, which has been accelerated by lifestyle and environmental factors. The lipids (ceramides) which hold the barrier together naturally decrease as we get older, so using plat oils will help to replenish these, resulting in happy skin. Seed oils also absorb easily and penetrate deep below the skin's barrier to provide skin nutrition for cell regeneration. They also seal in the moisture and prevent the hyaluronic acid we naturally produce from evaporating. Combined with the natural oils, plant oils will draw out impurities and find the balance your skin needs to thrive.

What's your no. 1 sincare and beauty tip?

Make seed oils a regular part of your skincare routine, including your scalp and body. They are the purest way to get EFAs, vitamins, and antioxidants into skin to support its healthy function. They are so versatile and can be used on their own or mixed into moisturisers, primers, and even with your foundation to add a naturally healthy glow to skin. When used correctly, they will not leave skin looking or feeling greasy.

What's your personal definition of beauty?

Beauty to me is your inner confidence shining through without the weight of other people's judgement affecting you. You do you.

Where do you go to feel inspired?

Wide open spaces surrounded by nature is where I feel free and connected to myself again. It is here that I feel inspired and energised, which is why I try to make it out into nature every day before I start work.

How do you integrate sustainability into your own lifestyle?

I choose to buy from brands who have made a commitment to sustainability, and often they are small, independent brands. I use Abel & Cole for my weekly shop as they support local producers and offer products without packaging, minimising on waste. I recycle everything I can, and will choose products that come in recyclable packaging. I walk more than I drive. Every small step really does have a cumulative impact.

How do you like to start and end your day?

I like to start my day slowly when I wake naturally, then have a pint of warm water followed by a walk in nature, all before I even think about work. And my day ends with a mindful skincare routine using my oils, teamed with a face and neck massage. I'll read in bed on most nights, which helps me get off to sleep calmly.

What does self-care mean to you and how has the pandemic influenced this?

My skincare routine was always one way for me to incorporate self-care into my life. During the pandemic, I added other mindful practices to support my mental well-being, including meditation. Self-care shows up in so many ways, it can be either physical or emotional. To me it is doing whatever I need to do to make myself feel whole again. It starts with being mindful and intentional with my actions, and blocking out any 'noise' so that I can stay balanced and not have my energy drained unnecessarily.

What's your favourite travel destination and where do you want to go next?

My favourite travel destination is the African continent. I have visited nine countries so far and want to try to visit all fifty-four countries. Three generations of my family lived in Uganda and Tanzania so you could say the love of this continent is in my blood. Next on the travel list is Madagascar, although I am unsure when that will happen.
